Design Trends for 2020 to Add to Your Craft

Spread the love

The year 2020 is in full swing. Although we have been reflecting on the end of a year and a decade, it is nice to think ahead about what trends may be coming later this year. Let’s look ahead and embrace the styles of 2020 in our crafting!

It’s always refreshing to look towards outward inspiration for my crochet makes, and the design trends of 2020 are no exception. It forces me to adapt fads into something that fits in with my personal style and brand, which helps me stretch and grow my design skills.

Below are four trends I foresee in home decor over the next year that I think can be adapted to crochet, or any craft for that matter. I’ll include some ideas to get you thinking about what you can make with these design elements. You can check out my Pinterest board here for more inspiration that falls into these categories. Make sure to share with me how you are incorporating these trends into your craft.

Natural Elements

Natural elements have been having a moment in home decor, and that will continue to grow throughout the year. Some examples include wood, grasses, even live plants. Natural materials also include items such as hemp and rattan. These elements add warm, neutral tones to a space and make the area feel cozy, homey, and rustic. In interior design, this trend is often seen as rattan baskets or chairs, macrame hangings and tapestries, wood furniture and kitchenware, and faux and real greenery.

How do you include natural elements into your craft? Some of these materials can be used in making your crafts, such as using a branch as the top of your tapestry or crocheting with hemp. You can also create the illusion of natural elements by mimicking the texture of woven rattan, wood grains, and plant leaves. Inspiration can even strike as the natural tones you work with or how you style your craft. Natural elements will bring all of the warm, light, and rustic vibes to whatever you DIY this year.

Art Deco Throwback

Now that we’re in 2020, there is a big swing towards including design from the Roaring Twenties. This 1920s iconic style was considered to be a culmination of modern and revolutionary designs, with elements of Art Deco included in art, fashion, and architecture. The general vibe of this time period was glamorous and modern. There are a few aspects of the Art Deco style that are coming back in style that can inspire you in your crafting. Common elements include repeating motifs, symmetry, arches, and other geometric shapes. During the current revival of Art Deco, many designers are including patterns of geometric lines and shapes. However, Art Deco is so much more than we often think, as it lasted almost three decades- so don’t limit your inspiration to only what you see most often during this revival.

You can incorporate Art Deco designs into your crafts in numerous ways, both in easily recognized motifs as well as in more researched inspiration. Examples of popular design elements of Art Deco include repeating line patterns of fans or arches, as well as more complex repeating patterns. These designs can easily be integrated into your craft, such as in an afghan design or hanging tapestry. Gold is a great accent color to use against a white or black background to accomplish this look in your makes, especially if you are using paint or resin on a hard surface. The velvet trend extends from this time period and can be used in unconventional ways, such as in stuffed animals or home decor pieces. Just make sure you channel the glam vibes to incorporate Art Deco into your crafts.

Abstract Shapes

Although geometric shapes are large part of the Art Deco trend, there is a separate trend that will be big throughout 2020: abstract shapes. This includes a lot of curved and angular furniture, diverging from what we typically think of as popular interior design. The varying shapes and sizes that are evident in home decor of this trend create interest. Pieces made with abstract shapes are unique. The mixture of multiple abstract shapes takes color blocking to the next level. An important design element related to this trend is balance; without proper balance, the eyes can easily be overwhelmed by a lot of shapes and colors. If you use balance appropriately, you can make an abstract piece the center of attention without screaming out loud.

This trend can take place in your creations with some intentional color blocking; pick your colors wisely to set the mood you want with your modern pieces. You can design vases in unique shapes for home decor, or create those unique shapes on ordinary objects to revamp them. Just make sure that you are intentional with your use of the abstract trend so that you can create beautiful craft pieces and not just something compiled randomly.

Warm Tones and Neutrals, and Some Statement Colors

The final big trend you can incorporate into your craft design is the use of popular colors: warm tones and neutrals, which are the ultimate color palette for 2020. Just like how natural elements will bring a cozy, rustic vibe, warm colors will bring warmth into the things you create. Neutrals are classic, and grays and creams go with everything, so with a yellow undertone these shades can easily fit in with the cozy vibes. Other colors having a moment this year will be silver, forest green, and neon shades. You should expect to see these as pops of color to diversify a space. Silver will probably be used where bronze has been having a moment, though we’ll still see bronze as metallic embellishments. Forest green will be more common in furniture or cabinetry, while neon colors will play a larger roll in crafting materials and artwork.

Crafts can easily channel this trend. Neutrals have always been a reliable color palette, and warm light tones are no exception. If you choose to make something in these colors, they will look really nice when used in combination with one another. It makes for great market or portfolio preparation so that all your pieces look cohesive with one another. As for silver, forest green, and neon, these elements will serve as a pop of color for those feeling more spunky. Small, inexpensive crafts will be a good way to use these colors and get the ambitious and average person alike to enjoy them.

These trends will be present in home decor this year, but can easily be integrated into your crafting. Just look around you for inspiration! Many of these trends can be combined as well, such as warm neutral colors being used with natural elements, or neon colors and abstract art.
