Inspired by the patchwork nature of springtime garden beds, the Garden Bed Blanket is a simple intarsia color block throw that uses a variety of spike stitches between the color changes to add some interest. A perfect first intarsia project, this blanket is a great way to play with color. The Garden Bed Blanket is constructed in one piece from the bottom up as a throw blanket, but options for customizing the size are included within the pattern. A video tutorial is included to help you complete the different spike stitches (check it out down below!).

I absolutely love the visual symmetry and order of this blanket, and how the spike stitches bridge the color blocks together. This color palette is so dreamy too! I used Furls Crochet Wander in the colors Aurora, Bergamot, Surf, and Peninsula, which is a soft and sleek 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn. As a magazine designer, I was gifted the yarn and a Furls Odyssey hook for this pattern. Furls Odyssey hooks are my absolute favorite! The weight and shape of them give a luxurious experience.

Furls Wander yarn is 120 yards per 100 gram skein. I used four skeins of each of the four colors to make my throw, which is approximately 40 inches wide by 50 inches tall. I opted for a US I/ 5.5 mm hook because that gives me the best combination of structure and drape in a worsted weight crochet piece like this one.

If you haven’t crocheted a spike stitch before, you totally should try it! It’s a simple variation on a single crochet stitch that is easy to learn. The pattern itself has a photo tutorial to guide you through these stitches. I also have a quick tutorial on my YouTube channel that you can watch to learn how to make the variety of spike stitches I used in this pattern.

As I said above, this pattern is currently only available in Crochet Foundry’s April 2023 magazine. This digital magazine has a mission to provide modern crochet patterns for extended sizing (XS-5X). You can purchase this magazine issue individually, or you can choose to purchase the Spring Magazine Bundle (which gives you access to March, April, and May 2023 issues). You can even subscribe to Crochet Foundry magazine for a whole year and get your issues a week early each month. Other benefits of the annual subscription include getting a free Furls Crochet Streamline Resin Hook ($34 value) and Crochet Foundry tote bag ($14 value)!

A single digital issue of Crochet Foundry is only $8, and with 6 patterns it’s an awesome value! The Garden Bed Blanket will be exclusive to Crochet Foundry for three whole months, so jump on this chance to get the magazine digital download to help support all the awesome designers this month!

This shrug is so chic! And look at the other amazing patterns in this issue:

Anyway, I just wanted to share this HUGE accomplishment with you because I am so grateful to have a design published in a magazine. I truly appreciate your support so much!

Happy making!
