Little Love Letter Free Pattern

Spread the love

I adore ”love”. It is beautiful to see the ways that people and creatures alike show their affection and care for another. I get all the good feelings inside. Although I firmly believe that love should be celebrated anytime, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and it serves as a great reminder to express our love for those around us.

This free pattern is a super quick make (it takes less than an hour!) and is a great way to use up your scrap yarn. Use these envelopes as home decor, a sweet little package to give a valentine, or even a keepsake for your kids or spouse that you can use to send love notes year round. If you are feeling ambitious about making your own crafty valentines to send with your children for the school party, these make a unique handmade gift that you can whip up in a short amount of time. Get creative with different colors, or use the heart appliqués in other projects!

Materials Needed:

  • I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
  • 2 colors of worsted weight yarn, approximately 20 yards total (I used Cream and Plum Wine by Yarnspirations Caron Simply Soft)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Optional: magnet to attach your letter to a refrigerator

Abbreviations:

  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • SC: single crochet
  • DC: double crochet
  • TC: triple crochet
  • SS: slip stitch
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge is not super important for this pattern, but my envelope was approximately 4’’ x 4’’ before folding. My completed envelope was approximately 2.5’’ x 2.5’.’ You can always make a larger envelope by completing a square with more stitches and row; just be sure to measure until you get a true square or you won’t be able to fold your letter properly.

Envelope

Ch 15.

Row 1: SC in 2nd Ch from hook and each Ch across. Turn (14).

Row 2: Ch 1. SC in each st across. Turn (14).

Rows 3-16: Repeat row 2.

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Your envelope square before folding it into its shape

You will now have a square. Orient the square so that the corner with the long tail is pointing towards you. Then, fold in the the three corners closest to you towards the center of the square. Thread your tapestry needle and whip stitch the edges of the square that touch each other in this configuration. Once you complete one edge, you will have to weave the long tail through the envelope towards the other bottom corner. Whip stitch that edge together.

Be careful to not accidentally thread your long tail through the back side of the envelope! You want to be able to open it and use it.

Weave in both ends. One side of the envelope will remain open so that you can still put things (like a valentine or chocolate) inside. To close, just tuck that open corner into the center of the envelope.

Heart Appliqué

Sew the heart to the front of the envelope.

Optional: You can attach some yarn to the upper corners of the envelope to make the envelope hang from a doorknob. Or you can attach a magnet to the back of the envelope to put on your fridge!

There you have it, a quick and simple valentine that can help spread the love this year and many years to come. Let me know in the comments below how you are using your Little Love Letters or tag me on Instagram @crowchetcreations. Wishing you lots of love this Valentine’s Day!
