Jumbo Crochet Hook: A Free Pattern

Spread the love

My 6 month old daughter is interested in everything I do, including crochet. She loves mangling skeins of yarn while I sit next to her and stitch. Crochet hooks aren’t usually baby-friendly, so I thought I would make her a toy crochet hook to mouth on and swing around while she played. This is baby’s first crochet hook!

The free version of this pattern is below (keep reading!) but if you would like to support my small business you can purchase an inexpensive printable PDF of the pattern from my Etsy, Ravelry, website, and LoveCrafts shops. My little business thrives on support from people like you, thank you!

This Jumbo Crochet Hook is a fun addition to your craft room! I made it originally for my daughter so that she could have a baby-safe crochet hook to play with while I got crafty sitting next to her. It is the perfect size for small hands to grasp and for small mouths to teeth on. Made in the amigurumi style of crochet, it is really quick and easy for a confident beginner to make. It takes less than 50 yards of yarn, so it is the ultimate stash-buster project. You can even include a stiffening agent like a dowel or some wire inside so that this can be used to hook a few stitches (instead of as a toy)!

MATERIALS

  • Approximately 50 yards of worsted weight yarn
    • I also made a sample with DK weight cotton yarn with slightly smaller dimensions, though that sample also took approximately 50 yards of yarn.
  • G/4.25 mm crochet hook
    • The DK weight version was made with a 3.25 mm hook
  • Polyfil stuffing or stuffing of your choice
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker
  • Optional (if not intended for child or pet use): wooden dowel or metal wire cut to approximately 80% of the intended length

SKILL LEVEL

  • Advanced beginner; this pattern contains increases, decreases, and joining pieces

GAUGE

  • Gauge is not important; just as in other amigurumi patterns, the stitches should be tight for the pattern so that the object keeps its shape

SIZE

  • My worsted weight crochet hook measured approximately 10.5 cm around the shaft and 11 inches long
    • My DK weight version measured 9 cm around the shaft and 9.5 inches long
  • Size will vary based on your tension

NOTES

  • This pattern is written with the lip of the crochet hook completed first, and then set aside (do not fasten off). Then the crochet hook is completed from the shaft up, with the lip added onto the shaft at the appropriate point in the pattern.
